The first man and woman, Adam and Eve, were to govern creation
with God, who also gave them guidelines for living. Unfortunately they
were persuaded to believe they could live independently of God.
Believing this lie, they willingly disobeyed Him. The consequences of
their actions were devastating! Like a virus, sin entered into all of
creation, including the hearts of Adam and Eve, and was passed from
generation to generation.
You've probably seen, heard, or experienced
stories of murder, kidnapping, earthquakes, greed, scandals, war, and
poverty. All these things (and more!) point to the reality and presence of
sin around us. Sadly, the world in which we live is horribly flawed
Sin is not only around us, but also in us. When we
think about the perfection and love that existed at the beginning of
creation, we realize "we are far more flawed and far more sinful than
we can dare imagine." 2 Any thought we have, any word we speak, or
any self-serving motivation contrary to God’s perfect will for us demonstrates
our sinfulness. An honest glance at our own hearts erveals we
"all have sinned”. 3 The truth is "the entire world is guilty before God." 4
But there is a reason for hope...
